(AP) — Louisiana elections officials are hoping turnout will reach 35 percent in Tuesday’s election.
If that expectation from the Secretary of State’s Office is met, that would be far short of the state’s last round of congressional elections in 2008, when a heated presidential election battle drove 65 percent of Louisiana’s voters to the polls.
On the ballot this time are a U.S. Senate race matchup between Republican incumbent David Vitter and Democrat Charlie Melancon, six U.S. House races and a runoff for lieutenant governor between Republican Secretary of State Jay Dardenne and Democratic political newcomer Caroline Fayard. A slew of local elections also are on ballots around the state.
Nearly 125,000 people — out of 2.9 million voters — cast ballots early for this election, in the early voting period that wrapped up this week.
