Junior midfielder Natalie Martineau scored on a header in double overtime to give LSU a 1-0 win against Kentucky and three much-needed points in the standings. It was the first overtime win for LSU (5-5-3, 2-2-1) in its fourth opportunity this season. The Wildcats (7-5-1, 1-3-1) never threatened offensively, putting zero shots on goal and managing only one corner kick. However, they stayed in the game thanks in part to the Tigers’ chronic finishing problems. LSU had a 10-1 corner kick advantage and needed nine shots on goal before finally beating Kentucky goalkeeper Sydney Hiance. “I was beginning to think we were a little snakebitten,” said LSU coach Brian Lee. “Some of those [chances] were harder to miss than to make.” Martineau’s header came off a cross from sophomore forward Carlie Banks, who pestered Hiance all night, racking up a game-high seven shots. “I saw Carlie coming and the ball came over and I just jumped as high as I could,” Martineau said. The goal was Martineau’s team-leading fifth of the season. It came at a moment when LSU needed it most, staring at the possibility of a tie against a disjointed Kentucky squad. Freshman goalkeeper Megan Kinneman recorded the third shutout of her young career, although she needed no saves to get it. The Tigers return to the LSU Soccer Complex on Sunday to face Vanderbilt (5-7-1,1-3-1). The Commodores earned their first conference win of the season against Arkansas on Friday.
