Lee Roy Williams Jr., an armed suspect found at Dalrymple Drive and May Street, has been taken into custody, according to officers on the scene.
Students received warning of the suspect through an emergency text message at 2:57 p.m. The message instructed students to stay away from the area until further notification.
Another text message was sent around 3:50 p.m. that the suspect is in custody.
According to LSU Police Department spokesman Sgt. Blake Tabor, the Baton Rouge Police Department, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office and LSUPD got a call from Calcasieu law enforcement officials about a man wanted for a quadruple homicide in Calcasieu Parish that was in Baton Rouge.
The three departments were given a description of the suspect’s car and began patrolling, and eventually an EBR Sheriff detective spotted him in his car the Baton Rouge Beach area, according to EBR Sheriff Sid Gautreaux.
Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso said in a news conference the suspect’s car was identified as a blue Ford Explorer and inside the vehicle was Williams, along with two unidentified white males.
Officers surrounded the car and began negotiations with Williams. Shots were fired by officers when Williams tried to drive away, according to Mancuso
“My understanding is one of the deputies did shoot at the car to disable the tires, and they also believed [Williams] was going to run over another deputy,” Mancuso said.
Though the suspect remained in his vehicle for most of the negotiations, Mancuso said he did emerge at one point when officers believed Williams wanted the officers to shoot him. Mancuso said he was subdued and taken into custody.
Mancuso confirmed Williams is a “strong person of interest” in the Calcasieu Parish quadruple homicide, though that status may change after he is interviewed by officers.
At the time of Mancuso’s 4 p.m. news conference, investigators from Calcasieu Parish were en route to Baton Rouge by plane to examine the crime scene.
More than 30 squad cars were on the scene as the incident happened, and an EMS service and canines were also on standby.
The incident caused a large traffic jam on Interstate 10 near the Dalrymple exit.
Mancuso said investigations on Williams began when the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office received word from police in Iowa, La., that Williams was staying in a Iowa hotel Sunday night. Through interviews with eyewitnesses, investigators were able to determine a location where Williams would be in Baton Rouge today.
