Cody Loup and Olivier Borsos were all set to take the court Sunday at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga., but rain delays and limited indoor courts caused the men’s tennis team to return home.
Senior Loup, juniors David Roberts and Jordan Girdley along with Borsos, a sophomore, all traveled to the Southern Intercollegiates.
The same quartet competed in the University of Louisiana-Lafayette Invitational the previous weekend, with Borsos losing in the flight A singles final and doubles duo Girdley and Roberts falling in the flight B doubles final.
Loup and Borsos had success in flight B of the doubles bracket on Saturday, defeating Elon’s Tommy Darling and Eric Turner 9-8(2) to clinch a spot in the quarterfinals.
Roberts also won on Saturday with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Alex Yuille of Georgia Southern in the flight C singles bracket.
Borsos and Loup both suffered losses in flight B of the singles bracket on Saturday. Borsos fell 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 to Dusan Milijevic of Georgia Tech and Loup lost 7-5, 6-3 in straight sets to Max Stevents of Tennessee.
Coach Jeff Brown was pleased with the results and was eagerly anticipating day three of the four day event.
“It was another good weekend for us in the early fall,” said Brown in a news release. “I have seen a lot of improvement from the guys in both singles and doubles, and we are looking forward to the matches tomorrow.”
The damp conditions and limited number of indoor courts ultimately led to the cancellation of the finals.
The Tigers will return to courts next Friday, Oct. 1, at the Rice Invitational at Jake Hess Stadium in Houston, Texas.
