When LSU won the national title in both 2003 and 2007, there were a slew of guys that LSU fans idolized such as Jacob Hester, Glenn Dorsey, Craig Steltz and Early Doucet. But as the Tigers 2010 season kicks off, the fans are in search of a hero who will turn the team into a Cinderella story.
After finishing the season with a record of 9-4, the team proved to have no shining star bright enough for fans to rage about. Though the sales record at the LSU SportsShop show that Charles Scott, former running back, sold the most popular jersey last season, he is not returning.
So that leaves the lingering question: whose jersey will dominate at tailgate parties this season?
According to the ACC and SEC blog, this season could possibly belong to LSU’s quarterback Jordan Jefferson. Fans were proud of Jordan’s breakthrough in the 2008 Chik-Fil-A Bowl but not so much of his “regression” in 2009.
”With receivers such as Terrance Toliver and Reuben Randle, Jefferson has to trust that it’s okay to throw the ball when the guys are not completely wide open,”SportsTyper, leading blogger for the ACC and SEC blog wrote.
It would be best that he trust his offensive line as well, said SportsTyper. It’s difficult enough for a young quarterback to learn how to keep his eyes downfield, go through his progressions, step into a pocket, and deliver a throw but with an improved offensive line he will be able to do just that.
Saturday Night Slant, a LSU sports website, reported that offensive line for the 2010 season has improved tremendously. “With what looks to be an improved line and running game in 2010, as well as some experience under his belt, expect to see an improved Jordan Jefferson this fall,” wrote Sportstyper.
“I know he will be the best this season,” said David Gibson, kinesiology sophomore. “He has so much more experience now and I believe he knows what he has to improve on from last season.”
Other players on the offensive team that may shine for LSU are Terrance Toliver, senior wide receiver, Russell Shepard, sophomore wide receiver, Stevan Ridley senior running back and Michael Ford redshirt freshman running back.
“Shepard did not see the field enough in 2009.” SportsTyper wrote on his blog. “Things look different heading into 2010. Shep is practicing primarily as a wide receiver and will be utilized in the slot.”
“Fans have been coming in non-stop,” said Jewel Fourrier, SportsShop Coordinator. “So far the most sold jersey has been number 10, Shephard.”
On the other hand Toliver will be doing his best to lead the team as a senior player. Last season was very productive for the WR but he also has a few things to touch up on this season. Ridely and Ford are expected to make the majority of the team’s carries that will gain yardage on the offense.
“Everyone on the team is a hero,” said Kalia Pikes, mass communications junior. “I’m not big on sports but I am a fan of the football team as a whole. Everyone who contributes morally and physically is a hero in my book.”
