NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A government watchdog group in Washington is seeking a Senate ethics committee investigation of Louisiana Sen. David Vitter.
Complaints from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington center on Vitter’s former aide, Brent Furer.
Furer was arrested for an alleged knife attack on a girlfriend in 2008 and later pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges. He also faced drunk-driving charges while working for Vitter, who is a Republican.
CREW says taxpayer money twice was used for Furer trips to Louisiana when he was scheduled for court appearances. The group also says Vitter lied when he said Furer did not have responsibility for women’s policy issues.
Furer resigned in June.
Vitter’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
