NASHVILLE, Tenn. — LSU’s defense limited Vanderbilt to 135 total yards and eight first downs to handle the Commodores, 27-3, on Saturday night in Nashville, Tenn.
The Tigers’ defensive line recorded six sacks on Vanderbilt junior quarterback Larry Smith.
Senior defensive tackle Drake Nevis led the charge with five tackles and two and a half sacks.
“Drake Nevis, along with some of the other guys, is really disruptive,” said LSU coach Les Miles. “The quickness off the edge with [redshirt freshman defensive end] Sam [Montgomery] and [junior defensive end] Kendrick Adams and those guys — it’s a very healthy situation.”
The Commodores only converted 2-of-13 third downs, and Smith was held to 70 passing yards.
LSU’s offense came alive in the fourth quarter, scoring 17 points with 150 rushing yards.
Junior running back Stevan Ridley led the charge with 159 yards and a touchdown.
“I just went out there and played football,” Ridley said. “Last week with two fumbles, it really hurt me. I let the team down, and I had to come out here and make a statement.”
LSU’s passing offense was not as effective as the running game. Junior quarterback Jordan Jefferson was 8-for-20 with 96 passing yards.
“We’re going to expect more out of the position,” Miles said.
