It came down to the wire, but the Los Angeles Dodgers finally got their man.
The Dodgers signed LSU freshman quarterback Zach Lee to a five-year, $5.25 million contract Monday night, just before Major League Baseball’s draft signing window closed.
“This was a very personal decision for Zach and his family,” said LSU football coach Les Miles. “This opportunity was just too difficult to pass up. We wish Zach and his family the very best. He’s an outstanding young man and we hope he develops into a great Major League pitcher.”
Lee was drafted No. 28 overall by the Dodgers in this year’s MLB draft, but he elected to enroll at LSU during the summer. He participated in summer workouts and the early days of fall camp with the Tigers before ultimately signing.
Lee was also expected to compete for a spot in the LSU baseball team’s pitching rotation.
Former LSU pitcher Anthony Ranaudo has also signed with the Boston Red Sox, LSU confirmed in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Ranaudo was picked by Boston with the No. 39 overall pick in the compensation round A of the 2010 MLB Draft.
Ranaudo was one of the Tigers’ top starters in 2009 on his way to Second-Team All-Southeastern Conference honors, but he struggled with injuries in 2010 on his way to a 7.32 ERA and a 5-3 record.
LSU also confirmed that signees Garin Cecchini (fourth round) and Lucas LeBlanc (11th round) have signed with the Red Sox.
Miles will address the media tomorrow afternoon. LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri will also hold a press conference to address the makeup his roster after the MLB signing deadline.
