The LSU track and field team opened up the indoor season in grand fashion by winning 11 events at Friday’s Purple Tiger Invitational. The team saw some great performances by familiar faces and newcomers alike.
Junior thrower Walter Henning kicked off the day for the Tigers by launching the 35-pound weight 71 feet 4 ‘frac34; inches on his first throw of the day. The throw won the event for Henning, and was good enough for an automatic NCAA championship qualifying mark.
The debut of the 2010 freshman class was also a success for LSU. Freshmen Jaora Jackson, Demar Forbes and Takeia Pinckney all finished either first or second in events LSU would go on to win.
The Tiger pole vaulters dominated the competition by claiming the top five spots in the event. Sophomore Marcus McGehee highlighted the Tigers’ performance by clearing 5.05 meters to claim the individual title in the event.
The Lady Tiger 60-meter sprinters also fared well by claiming six of the top seven spots in the event. Pinckney led the Tigers with her NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.40 seconds.
