The No. 29 LSU men’s tennis team nearly pulled off a big upset Saturday afternoon, falling 4-2 to Florida State in the consolation round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Tigers (0-2) fell behind early as they lost the doubles point, but they stormed back with singles victories from freshmen Stefan Szacinski and James Turbervill.
Szacinksi rolled past Andres Bucaro, 6-1, 7-5, and Turbervill knocked off Anderson Reed, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, to narrow the margin to 3-2.
The upset bid came short when No. 27 Jean-Yves Aubone edged junior Sebastian Carlsson in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, to clinch the match for the Seminoles.
The No. 28 LSU women’s tennis team fell to San Diego, 4-1, Saturday evening in a consolation match at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Los Angeles, Calif.
The Lady Tigers got off to a strong start in doubles when sophomore Whitney Wolf and freshman Keri Frankenberger blew past Juliette Coupez and Alexandra Demidova, 8-2, but dropped the next two doubles matches as San Diego won the doubles point.
Freshman Kaitlin Burns evened the score at 1-1 after a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Demidova.
The Toreros answered with back-to-back singles victories and clinched the match when Coupez barely got by No. 120 Wolf, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
The men’s team returns to action next weekend at No. 34 Rice, while the women return home to face Texas A&M.
