California Irvine eliminated the LSU baseball team from the NCAA postseason Sunday night in a game that in no way resembled the teams’ initial meeting on Friday.
The Anteaters (39-20) utilized pitching and defense to hold the Tigers (41-22) in check in a 4-3 elimination victory.
The loss comes just 48 hours after LSU outlasted California Irvine in a thrilling, offense-heavy extra innings win. The Tigers won that game, 11-10, but their progress was negated by a 6-3 loss to UCLA on Saturday night.
The loss to the Anteaters ends the Tigers’ season just one week after a surprising run to the Southeastern Conference tournament championship.
California Irvine and UCLA will meet at 8 p.m. Sunday to determine who will advance to next weekend’s super regional.
