Break out the champagne ladies and gentlemen — Zach Mettenberger is finally a Tiger.
The Butler Community College quarterback finally made his commitment public this morning, according to multiple recruiting sites, after remaining mum since his official visit back on Nov. 19 for the Ole Miss game.
“I’m letting you know I committed on my [Ole Miss] visit but I’m letting the public know today,” Mettenberger said via text message this morning to TigerBait.com.
Mettenberger wrapped up his one-year stint with the Grizzlies on Sunday, falling 13-12 to Navarro College in the NJCAA National Championship Game.
The former Georgia gunslinger is the 18th member of Tigers’ 2011 recruiting class.
Mettenberger edged out fellow teammate Aaron Murray last spring for the starting job at Georgia, but was dismissed from the team after several run-ins with the law.
The 6-foot-5-inch, 228-pound pocket passer becomes the second quarterback in the class, joining Athens, Ala., quarterback Stephen Rivers.
Mettenberger completed the season at Butler with 2,678 passing yards, 32 touchdowns and only four interceptions.
If Mettenberger enrolls at LSU for the spring, he will be immediately eligible to compete in Spring practice at the end of February, similar to what Auburn quarterback Cam Newton did last year, and will have three years of eligibility left.
