What do we know so far, and how does that relate to LSU?
Last fall, aspiring agent Christian Dawkins was sentenced to serve prison time after he was tried in the Federal college basketball corruption case.
Dawkins, along with two other former Adidas employees, were found guilty on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The two former Adidas employees took their guilty sentences, but Dawkins has not.
Dawkins instead has chosen to fight his sentencing, and that’s where head coach Will Wade and LSU have come into play.
On March 7, a Yahoo! article was released alleging that Wade was caught on a federal wiretap trying to solicit a strong offer for the playing services of freshman guard Javonte Smart.
The following day, Wade was suspended before LSU would play for a Southeastern Conference regular season championship against Vanderbilt. As a precaution, the University announced that Smart would also be held out for that game.
Smart would later be cleared during the SEC Tournament, but Wade’s suspension would last beyond the length of both the SEC and NCAA tournaments.
Interesting developments occurred on April 14 when Wade was reinstated after meeting with University officials.
Now while that’s good for all parties involved, it doesn’t mean that Wade and LSU are still out of the woods yet, as Wade is still set to testify in the Southern District Court in New York on April 22.
It should be noted that Wade was subpoenaed by the defense in this federal case and not prosecutors. There is growing confidence among many that Wade may not even need to testify, but that still remains to be seen as he is still slated to appear and speak at the hearing.
Last week, there was a notion filed by attorneys that would actually bar subpoenaed testimonies from both Wade and Arizona’s Sean Miller, but that also remains to be seen. A federal judge still has yet to rule on this notion, but one would have to figure that the decision will come quickly before the April 22 trial.
No one knows what was asked or discussed at the meeting between University officials and Wade, but one would assume that there was some level of understanding that led to Wade’s reinstatement.
His reinstatement comes just in time for LSU’s coaching staff to make a late recruiting push. The late signing period began on April 17.
It has been a wild roller coaster ride to this year, but it feels like an end is in sight for everything that has transpired in recent days.
Stay tuned to what happens because as soon as you read this, there might already be another development into what was certainly been a memorable LSU basketball season.
