Former LSU safety Grant Delpit suffered a torn achilles at Cleveland Browns’ practice earlier this week, first confirmed by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport late Monday night.
Delpit was carted off Cleveland’s practice field with a lower body injury Monday morning, and an MRI later that day confirmed Delpit, who was slated to start for the Browns at free safety, will now miss his entire rookie season.
Delpit took to Twitter following the news.
Cleveland selected Delpit 44th overall in this past April’s NFL Draft. He was one of 14 of his Tigers teammates to hear their names called during the draft, a record high for a single school. Delpit was a key piece in LSU’s defense, a unit that allowed just under 22 points per game, throughout their 2019 championship run. Delpit, a consensus All-American and a first team All-SEC member each of the past two seasons, was named the 2019 Jim Thorpe award winner, given to college football’s best defensive back. He racked up 199 total tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, and 8 interceptions during his time in Baton Rouge.
