The No. 8 LSU softball team battled with No. 10 Auburn for 14 innings in the Tigers’ Southeastern Conference home opener Friday night.
The game was tied 2-2 from the sixth inning until the 14th, when junior second basemen Becca Schulte hit a walk-off RBI in the 14th to lift LSU over Auburn.
Schulte hit a grounder through the left side of the infield to drive home sophomore first basemen Amanda Doyle.
“I was super happy to be in that position,” Schulte said. “You live for moments like that when you play.It felt pretty good.”
Senior pitchers Allie Walljasper and Carley Hoover kept the Tigers in the game, as they each saw time in the circle. Walljasper started and pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs and five hits. Walljasper threw for six strikeouts tonight.
Hoover shined in her seven innings as a relief pitcher, allowing no earned runs and six hits. She threw a staggering 10 strikeouts.
“I definitely wasn’t expecting to pitch that many innings,” Hoover said. “But I was really proud of our team and our fight tonight.”
In addition to Schulte, sophomore catcher Sydney Springfield and junior third basemen Shemiah Sanchez had RBIs tonight.
Both Auburn and LSU put up big offensive numbers, as LSU had 14 hits on the night, compared to Auburn’s 11. LSU’s fielding was what made the difference. LSU has no errors in 14 innings, while Auburn totaled four.
LSU moves to 20-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play, while Auburn fell to 23-3 and 0-1 in the SEC.
LSU will face Auburn for the second game of the series on Saturday, at 7:30 p.m. in Tiger Park.
