First, there was Jeremy Hill. Then, in came Leonard Fournette. And cue Derrius Guice. Now, for the first time in years, there’s not a household name in the backfield for the Tigers.
“Even when Leonard came in behind Jeremy and things like that, you have that ‘am I going to be able to meet that running back standard,'” sophomore running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire said.
Everybody has that person in every position room. There are greats in every room.”
Head coach Ed Orgeron told the media Sunday that just means the air attack will be used more often, something the Tigers aren’t used to.
“Until we find a feature back, the offense will obviously not be featured by a running back,” Orgeron said. “We can throw the football and I think we can do that a lot better.”
But there is something that Coach Orgeron and the Tigers are sure of: the leadership that junior linebacker Devin White brings to the team.
“I know I gotta do everything right,” White said.
“I gotta be early to meetings. I gotta stay after practice and watch film. I’m ready to take on the role. You know, last year, I jumped into the role in the middle of the season. I’m in the role right now. I’m gonna make the best out of my opportunity.”
That opportunity will continue throughout 12 more spring practices. Then, White and the Tigers take the field April 21 for their spring game.
The 2018 season begins at “Jerry’s World” in Dallas, Texas on September 1 against Miami.
