A new bill that would abolish the death penalty in Louisiana is advancing to the full senate for consideration.
Senate Bill 51 is sponsored by Democrat Sen. JP Morrell, who says that life in prison with no chance of parole is already a death sentence.
Morrell also said the it’s becoming harder and more expensive to carry out the death penalty.
Louisiana currently allows the possibility of a death sentence for those convicted of first-degree murder. If approved by the full senate, the bill would head to the house for consideration.
