ST. LOUIS — LSU falls short of a national championship once again.
With a score of 197.8375, the Tigers strung together some big performances.
“We had a chance the whole night,” LSU coach D-D Breaux said. “It was a fabulous meet with the top four teams. The lead would change and momentum would change and i just felt like we kept fighting.”
It all came down to the final rotation, where LSU put up a 49.4625 on vault led by big stuck vaults from senior Myia Hambrick and freshman Sarah Edwards.
But UCLA senior Peng Peng Lee pulled the Bruins into first place with a perfect 10 on beam in the final rotation, after hitting another 10 earlier in the meet on bars.
“I couldn’t have asked the kids to do more than keep yourselves in the meet until the last rotation and we did that.” Breaux said. “I was very pleased.”
After starting the Super Six on a bye, LSU came out with solid scores on both bars and beam through two rotations.
Freshman all-arounder Sami Durante kicked off the meet for the Tigers. She struggled through her routine for a 9.775.
The rest of the Tigers’ bars lineup stayed strong, not scoring lower than 9.830. Sophomore Kennedi Edney and junior Lexie Priessman both posted back-to-back 9.95s in the four and five spots.
The Tigers totaled 49.4750 on the event.
Yet again, the leadoff performer struggled on beam. Senior all-arounder Erin Macadaeg, who is normally a rock in the first spot, wobbled during her routine, scoring a 9.7375.
The rest of the lineup put up good scores, but Sarah Finnegan anchored the beam lineup with a 9.9375 to push the beam score to 49.3875.
After two rotations, LSU was in third place at 98.8625, behind only Oklahoma and Florida.
After another bye rotation, LSU came out big on floor to move within a 10th of a point of Oklahoma.
Freshman all-arounder Christina Desiderio put on a career high performance for a 9.90 in the second spot, while Finnegan and Hambrick posted 9.95s in the last two spots.
“We knew we had to build some momentum in our vaulting lineup, which we did,” Breaux said. “Sarah Edwards did the vault of her life and then Ruby [Harrold] does a good vault. The vaulting was really good. We got it from different people tonight and it just wasn’t quite enough to put us over the top.”
