Former LSU football All-American Booger McFarland continues to be a rising star in the broadcasting world.
According to reports by The Athletic and confirmed by the New York Post, McFarland will be joining ESPN’s Monday Night Football announcing team as a sideline analyst. An official announcement is expected later this week.
Contacted by The Advocate on Monday, McFarland declined comment at this time.
The Post reported last month that McFarland had auditioned for a role on Monday Night Football. ESPN’s search for replacements for play-by-play announcer Sean McDonough, who is returning to college football, and analyst Jon Gruden, now head coach of the Oakland Raiders, led the network to select Joe Tessitore (play-by-play) and Jason Witten (analyst). Lisa Salters will also reportedly continue in the traditional sideline reporter’s role.
McFarland has served as a college football analyst for ESPN since 2014, when he became part of the SEC Network’s original cast of announcers. In 2017, McFarland became ABC’s in-studio analyst during college football Saturdays.

A first-team All-American defensive tackle while playing at LSU from 1995-98, McFarland won Super Bowls with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts during his nine-year NFL career (1999-2007). The Winnsboro native still lives in the Tampa area.
“I think people understand what they get when they listen to me,” McFarland said in a 2017 interview with The Advocate. “I don’t try to give too much jargon. Whether you don’t know the game or played for 20 years, you can learn something. Just be a straight shooter. Most fans want their analysts to be honest.”
