Neither a four and a half hour weather delay or the Fordham Rams could stall sophomore Shelbi Sunseri or LSU softball in the regional opener as the Tigers won 9-0 in five innings.

For Sunseri, however, the win was not the most important thing today.

Her heart was with her high school, Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas where a gunman killed 10 people and injured 10 more earlier today.

Sunseri wore her high school’s colors in a ribbon during the game and hit 2-2, including a home run. She dedicated the win to the victims.

Sophomore pitcher Maribeth Gorsuch, who got the start over senior All-Americans Allie Walljasper and Carley Hoover, helped set the tone retiring the first three batters and totaled six strikeouts in four innings.

LSU would take full advantage in the bottom of the first after sophomore Aliyah Andrews singles and managed to get a run on a Fordham throwing error.

The Tigers picked up right where they left off in the bottom of the second as Sunseri singled to start an inning that would saw four hits and five runs to put LSU up 6-0.

She furthered the Tigers’ lead to seven with a solo home run in the third.

The Tigers would continue its assault in the fourth putting up two more runs, in part due to three errors by the Rams.

LSU would get it done defensively in the top of the fifth as Hoover stepped in to close the game with three strikeouts, as the Tigers run ruled Fordham.

It was Hoover’s first appearance in a game for LSU since an April 27 game against Florida.

LSU only allowed two hits during the game.

The Tigers compiled a NCAA tournament program high in stolen bases with eight.

LSU will be back in action at noon tomorrow against Houston who beat Louisiana-Lafayette 1-0 in the opening game.
