Tre’Davious White may live in New York playing for the Buffalo Bills, but when he needs his hair cut he makes sure to pay a visit to his barber all the way back in Baton Rouge.
TJ Malveaux started cutting White’s hair when he was playing at LSU. He even traveled with him to the 2017 NFL Draft in Indianapolis, a sure sign of success.
“When I moved to Baton Rouge, I started in another shop and I used to just sit down all day. I didn’t have any clientele,” Draft Picks owner, TJ Malveaux said, “I knew I could cut, but nobody else did because I wasn’t from the area.”
After moving to Baton Rouge, Malveaux was forced to start from scratch in another shop. He was eager to build his clientele, and with the help of two clients from back home Malveaux’s business picked up.
Vernon Norwood and Kenny Hilliard were both student athletes at LSU at the time, and they helped Malveaux by spreading the word to their teammates and friends on campus.
Malveaux’s name spread like wildfire.
“All the athletes, all the publicity, it draws in a lot of attention and a lot of clientele,” Malveaux said.
In a matter of four years Malveaux has managed to accumulate dozens of high profile athletes as clients. The impact LSU athletes have on social media played a huge part in the exposure he received, and helped him establish a name for himself as a barber in Baton Rouge.
Malveaux was able to open his own shop in Baton Rouge in July of 2017, a little over two months after attending the NFL draft with Tre’Davious White and Jamal Adams.
He named his shop Draft Picks Barber Shop, which he says was inspired by former LSU Defensive tackle, Davon Godchaux.
“He used to always say, man get me draft day fresh, get me draft day fresh. And you know, it just kind of stuck,” Malveaux said.
The Baton Rouge barber takes pride in the relationship he has with his clients and says he continues to get texts and calls from players even after they move on from LSU.
“I think it’s my personality. I don’t know why, but with the athletes I’m more of a big brother than a barber,” Malveaux said.
Attending NFL games can get a little tricky, but it’s an issue anyone would kill to have.
“When the Jets played the Saints they had Travin Dural with the Saints, and Jamal Adams with the Jets,” Malveaux said, “I’m at the game and I don’t really know who to cheer for, I’m a Saints fan but you know it’s hard.”
Social media and the influence of his clients has made all the difference in Malveaux’s success. To acknowledge that, he has an entire wall in his shop dedicated to every athlete who has trusted him to keep them draft day fresh on and off the field.
