The LSU Lady Tigers pushed past the Alabama Crimson Tide in overtime on Sunday in a 79-78 thriller.
In LSU’s senior day, the ceremony honored the lone senior on the roster, Raigyne Louis.
Louis is a fifth-year senior for coach Nikki Fargas and her number and accolades solidified her as one of the most accomplished players in LSU history.
Louis currently sits at No. 10 on the all-time scoring list at LSU. Louis is also the only LSU player to record 1,600 points, 700 rebounds, 250 steals and 200 assists in a career.
“Today was a little different,” Louis said. “It was actually an honor to see how hard they fought in overtime. Thank God for everything. I appreciate every moment. The overtime, the defense, the clutch shots by Chloe [Jackson], the defensive stops and clutch shots by Ayana [Mitchell] getting us to overtime and our bench coming in stepping up. It was just a moment I will never forget.”
Louis fouled out in the fourth quarter and finished her final game in the PMAC with five points, five assists, and four rebounds.
While the day was to honor Louis, junior guard Chloe Jackson and sophomore forward Ayana Mitchell played lights out for the Lady Tigers.
Jackson had a season-high 31 points and eight rebounds, taking over for LSU in overtime and giving the Lady Tigers what they needed to power past Alabama.
“I knew i had to step and help my team,” Jackson said. “It was not the prettiest win, but we knew we had to do in order to get the win.”
Mitchell had a career-high 27 points, including the game-tying shot to send the game to overtime. Mitchell also sealed the win for LSU with a defensive stop in the final seconds of overtime.
“I really can’t explain it,” Mitchell said. “We just knew we had to get it done. [Raigyne] is my best friend and she has done a lot for this program and I didn’t want her to go out with [a loss]. I did everything in my power that I could do.”
In front of one of the most chaotic crowds all season, the Lady Tigers found a way to pull out the victory and complete an 11-1 home record this season.
LSU finishes the regular season with 11 conference wins, which is the most since the 2007-2008 season when that team would eventually go to the Final Four.
LSU will not be back in action until its first game in the SEC Tournament. The tournament will last from March 1 to March 4 in Nashville, Tennessee.
LSU has locked up the No. 4 seed heading into the tournament will have its first game on Friday, March 2 at 2:30 p.m. against the winner of Texas A&M and Vanderbilt/Arkansas.
