BATON ROUGE — LSU President F. King Alexander Wednesday accepted the reform recommendations of the university’s Task Force on Greek Life, but created three new policy standards.
Alexander’s additional policy states that any student organization that hazes a student will be removed from campus, and any students found guilty of hazing, “after due process,” will be expelled.
Additionally, Alexander has implemented a “spot-check” policy that allows university officials to attend Greek parties and events to ensure the organizations are adhering to the new campus policies.
LSU administrators established the task force after Phi Delta Theta pledge Max Gruver was hazed to death in September.
“The timeline for implementation of these recommendations ranges from immediate to Fall 2018,” Alexander wrote. “There will be full and thorough follow-up checkpoints along the way, and there will never be a stopping point.”
The original recommendations of the task force banned kegs and hard liquor from Greek functions, implemented an amnesty program for students who report hazing, tightened rules for new member initiation, and require better new member education programs. There are 28 separate recommendations in the report.
“Cultural change is a process, and this should be considered the first step in a marathon, not a sprint,” Alexander wrote. “We are committed to real change, and I believe our students, staff, and faculty are behind me on that assertion.”
“There will be no ‘return to normal.'”
