LSU athletic director Joe Alleva has contacted the Southeastern Conference offices to voice his displeasure with the targeting penalty called on junior linebacker Devin White Saturday night during LSU’s 19-3 win over Mississippi State, according to a report by Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger.
Because it took place in the second half, White will miss the first half of LSU’s matchup with Alabama on Nov. 3.
According to Dellenger, Alleva called the league offices immediately following the game and is working on fighting the call.
White was flagged halfway through the fourth quarter for targeting Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald. A targeting penalty comes with an automatic ejection.
Officials reviewed the play on video and affirmed the call. Fans booed referees immediately after the call and continued throughout the rest of the game.
The SEC has no formal appeal process.
