Behind the Ballot is a two-day event, covering everything from the history of voting rights to the Secretary of State election. The program, sponsored and supported by F. King Alexander’s office, held events all day on October 29-30 across campus.
During the Secretary of State Forum held in the Journalism Building, 6 of the 9 candidates running for Louisiana Secretary of State got the chance to answer a series of questions.
All were given by a panel of scholars, who asked questions that ranged from their intentions on running to the plans they have once elected.
The office is F. King Alexander says “ we can instill the LSU and Greater Baton Rouge communities with a deeper understanding of what a vote represents — and remind us all that voting is both a duty and a privilege.” through Behind the Ballot.
This special election began in May of 2018, after Tom Schedler, former Louisiana Secretary of State, resigned from his position due to sexual harassment accusations.
The primary for the secretary of state’s election will happen on Nov. 6. It is predicted a runoff election — between the two candidates who get the most votes — will follow on Dec. 8.
All of the candidates stuck hard to their main campaign ideals.
Kyle Ardoin based his answers on the fact that he is the incumbent.
Gwen Collins-Greenup focused on Louisiana and her love for the state.
A.G. Crowe stood true to his campaign model as a businessman in office.
Renee Fontenot Free was keen on the fact that she has never run for office and believes the Secretary of States office should not hold a political title.
Finally, Julie Stokes emphasized her idea of forward thinking and putting the state first.
