The LSU Lady Tigers came back to knock off the Auburn Tigers 59-56 in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center Thursday night.
LSU (12-5, 4-2 SEC) trailed by as many as 11, but forced 27 turnovers to defeat Auburn (10-8, 1-5 SEC).
“There were a lot of looks early on that we were not knocking down,” LSU coach Nikki Fargas said. “We had players step up and we adjusted.”
Auburn’s press gave LSU trouble throughout the game, forcing LSU to turn the ball over seven times in the first quarter and 23 times in the game.
LSU was held scoreless for the final 4:36 of the first quarter to fall behind 13-10.
The cold streak stretched into the second quarter as LSU did not score for the first three minutes of it causing LSU to fall behind 17-10.
LSU would manage a comeback propelled by holding Auburn to 1-for-12 shooting to closer the second quarter. It would not be enough to take the lead as LSU remained down 22-20 at the half.
The struggles would continue into the third as LSU fell down by 11 before a comeback fueled by junior guard Chloe Jackson who had 9 of LSU’s 15 points in the third quarter.
LSU entered the final quarter down 42-35, before pulling away. LSU forced eight turnovers in the final quarter, including five in the final 3:21. Jackson led the way in the quarter, with 12 points. She had a season high 26 points.
“I just wanted to win,” she said. “I did what I could for my team.
LSU finally took the lead with 48 seconds left after a basket by sophomore forward Ayana Mitchell and would not relinquish it for the remainder of the game.
Senior guard Raigyne Louis scored 11 points and had 7 rebounds, including a critical one with 3 seconds left to clinch the win,
The schedule does not get easier for LSU. The next three opponents are all in the NCAA selection committee’s top 16, which was released in the halftime of the Tennessee-Notre Dame game.
“This is a tough conference,” Fargas said. “This is just what it is. We want to play against the best, and if we want to be the best, we got to beat the best.”
