Will Wade has suspended two LSU basketball players and granted two “leaves of absence.”
LSU Basketball Head Coach Will Wade addressed Monday the situation surrounding freshman forwards Mayan Kiir and Galen Alexander, who have been granted “leaves of absence,” and freshman guard Brandon Rachal and sophomore forward Wayde Sims, who have been suspended for one game.
“Sims and Rachal won’t be playing, won’t be traveling to Knoxville with us, won’t be playing at UT…just a violation of our team policies. It’s my decision,” Wade said.
Wade also said that Galen Alexander and Mayan Kiir will leave the team for an extended period of time, and Alexander will look to play elsewhere in the future.
“Galen will take a leave of absence from our team for the rest of the season, and then he will look for other places at the end of the season as he looks to kind of continue to move his life in a positive direction and we’re certainly going to be there to support him as he moves forward,” Wade said.
Mayan Kiir could, however, return to the Tigers next season.
“As it relates to Kiir, he is somebody who’s going to take a leave of absence as well, but he could possibly be back, so he’s not ‘dismissed’ or anything like that. He needs some time,” Wade said.
Wade said Kiir, like many students who arrive at college, need time to become acclimated.
“Most young kids and young men and young freshmen need [some time] as they adjust to college and some of the pressures and some of the things that go on in college.”
We will update this story as more information becomes available.
