LSU has added another weapon to its football staff. 
NFL veteran Greg McMahon was named special teams coordinator for the Tigers, the school announced on Friday. McMahon served as an analyst during the 2017 season. 
LSU coach Ed Orgeron hopes that McMahon will add some depth to the Tigers’ inconsistent special teams unit. LSU kickers went 16-for-27 on field goals, the worst since the 2005 season. Kickoff and punt units ranked 50th and 51st nationally. 
McMahon spent 13 years on the coaching staff at Eastern Illinois, where he spent five years coaching wide receivers and eight years coaching special teams and tight ends. 
Following his time at Eastern Illinois, McMahon spent 11 years with the New Orleans Saints and served as as the special teams coordinator for nine of them. He was part of the staff that led the Saints to the Super Bowl during the 2009 season. 
McMahon’s addition gives LSU’s staff a combined 65 years of NFL experience. 
“Coach McMahon brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the area of special teams to our staff,” LSU coach Ed Orgeron said in a press release. “He’s had success at the highest level of football, helping the Saints win a Super Bowl, and I know that with Greg working daily with our special teams, we will show marked improvement.”
