The LSU football team concluded its third week of spring practices Saturday in Tiger Stadium.
LSU coach Les Miles said the team ran 110 plays, focusing on red zone, short yardage and third-and-long situations.
Overall, Miles gave the nod to the Tigers’ defense.
“The defense kind of won the day,” Miles said. “We moved the football on offense at times, and I think we rushed the ball with regularity, but the defense came up with bigger plays at times.”
Miles complimented the play of freshman defensive tackle Anthony Johnson, sophomore safety Craig Loston and sophomore cornerback Tyrann Mathieu.
“[Mathieu] got a pick today and has made some big plays,” Miles said. “He had a very good day in both the return game and on defense.”
Sophomore wide receiver James Wright highlighted the offensive side of the scrimmage, catching three touchdowns, each from a different quarterback.
Sophomore Zach Mettenberger and seniors Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee each tossed a touchdown to Wright, but Mettenberger also found the endzone on a pass to redshirt freshman wide receiver Jarrett Fobbs.
“Mettenberger’s a very talented guy, but I think the two veterans still have an advantage with the understanding of the offense,” MIles said.
The running back position continued to handled by committee. Miles praised sophomores Spencer Ware, Michael Ford and Alfred Blue as well as redshirt freshman Jakhari Gore.
Gore is back with the running backs after spending time practicing with the wide receivers last season.
“[Gore] made some really nice runs,” MIles said. “I want to see him more and more.”
