University administrators have given the all-clear after a gas line broke behind East Campus Apartments near Raphael Semmes Road.
“The natural gas pipe has been repaired,” read an emergency text message sent just after noon.
Police cordoned off the area between the East Campus Apartments and the Laboratory School this morning because of a gas leak.
Representatives from Student Life canvassed the area, instructing students not to light open flames, smoke or grill until the leak is contained.
“Everything seems to be under control,” said Bobby Pitre, Executive Director of Facility and Utility Operations in the Office of Facility Services. Pitre said students should not be worried about their safety.
Initial reports indicated a contractor may have struck a gas line during construction in the area.
The University sent a warning about the leak via an emergency text message asking students to “avoid area until further notice.”
