LSU assistant football coach Frank Wilson has been named the Rivals.com recruiter of the year, the site announced on Monday.
Wilson, who doubles as LSU’s running back coach and recruiting coordinator, has already made a big impact in his first season. True freshman Tyrann Mathieu, arguably one of the team’s brightest stars this season, was recruited by Wilson.
The rookie coach has helped haul in another highly ranked recruiting class this season. The top five players in Louisiana, all recruited by Wilson, committed to play for LSU on National Signing Day last week.
Three five-star recruits—offensive tackle La’El Collins, defensive tackle Anthony Johnson and wide receiver Jarvis Landry all officially signed with the Tigers last week. Johnson is already enrolled in school and taking classes this semester.
Wilson also helped persuade numerous four-star recruits to join the Tigers. Quarterback Zach Mettenberger, receiver Odell Beckham Jr., running back Kenny Hilliard and offensive linemen Trai Turner and Corey White also inked with LSU last Wednesday.
“I think that Frank has a wonderful view of the recruiting coordinator’s position,” LSU coach Les Miles said last week. “He understands the responsibilities and gives us a great overview. I think he is a tremendous judge of talent. He also has great experience in interpersonal skills and gives our coaches a great resource in how to approach our better prospects. I thought he did a great job in his first year, and it will only get better.”
