In an hour, the fee review committee recommended a 2011-12 academic year student fee increase of $84.45, and with the added $90 Rally for Talley fee, total fees for next year come to $173.81 A full-time student this academic year will pay $932.60 per semester, or a total of $1,865.20 over the year. The committee’s recommendation represents a 9.3 percent increase. What the fee committee did not debate was a $90 Rally for Talley fee. The new $120 million Talley construction falls under student center expansion. At the groundbreaking ceremony in mid-August, President of the Student Centers Board of Directors Jonathon Smith said plans were in place to find donors to help support construction. “Eventually we are going to start a program where we will find donors, but right now students are having to pay most of the cost of the project,” Smith said. The University budget office uses a student population of 28,000 when considering budgetary obligations. At $90 per student, students will fork out a total of $2.25 million next year to help support Rally for Tally. The Talley fee represents 51.8 percent of the total recommended 2011-12 fee. Four students were on the nine-member review committee that met Tuesday afternoon: Student Body President Chandler Thompson, Student Senate President Ethan Harrelson and student representatives Matt Tucker and Bess Patton. They voted for smaller increases than the other members across the board, but not by much. The maximum increase allowable, including the $90 for student centers, was $174.45. Harrelson voted for an increase of $158.02, while Thompson and Tucker voted for $159.09. All of the other members bumped right up against the limit. A Student Senate fee committee, headed by Senator Patrick Devore, worked for weeks to gather information for the Student Senate to give their opinions on an increase. Devore and his colleagues created bills to present to the Senate over the weeks. The Senate voted on those bills Monday night. Devore presented the Senate’s votes to the fee review committee before any debate or discussion began. However, the committee did not heed Student Senate opinions. Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Tom Stafford, who chaired the committee along with Harrelson, warned committee members that the Senate resolutions were “very much
