(AP) — Gov. Bobby Jindal has stripped several items from the $25 billion state budget that would give state lawmakers more control over contracts in the health department and the state-run Recovery School District.
Jindal also removed $27 million in financial aid for college students, money for prisoner re-entry programs and a plan to use $3.5 million in Crescent City Connection tolls to hire a consultant to help prepare for the tolls’ expiration.
He also struck new performance requirements that would have been placed on a New Orleans voucher program that uses public tax money to pay for private school tuition for at-risk students.
The governor issued his 16 line-item vetoes to the budget Friday, the same day the new fiscal year began.
