N.C.State entered the weekend hoping to end what has been a decade of futility in Winston-Salem, but walked away from BB&T Field yearning for redemption, as the Wolfpack lost a close one, 34-27, on Saturday afternoon.
Quarterback play was the story of the game, with Wake Forest’s Tanner Price and junior Mike Glennon paving the way for their respective teams. Price led Wake with 297 yards through the air and one touchdown. Sophomore Michael Campanaro starred for the Deacs as well, catching one touchdown and throwing for another.
The Pack settled for field goals the entire first half as the offense struggled to find a rhythm, but they hit their stride at the end of the third quarter, when Glennon hit senior George Bryan over the middle for a 19 yard score and connected with junior Tobias Palmer on a 65-yard bomb down the right side. He finished the game with 315 yard and 3 touchdowns.
Just when the Pack looked finished, junior Brandon Bishop intercepted Price, setting up the offense to continue the comeback for State. This time, Glennon connected with senior T.J. Graham down the middle of the field for a 63-yard catch and run to make it a one possession game.
The State defense would come up big, forcing a three and out to give the Pack a chance to tie the game with 3:26 remaining. Glennon tried to orchestrate a winning drive, but the offense fell short. After senior George Bryan dropped a crucial third down pass, Glennon’s fourth down attempt fell incomplete. Wake Forest would take over on downs and run out the clock.
Next week, the 1-1 Pack return home to take on non-conference foe South Alabama.
