No. 19 LSU baseball evened its series against Auburn with a 8-6 win in Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader in Plainsman Park.
LSU (17-9, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) pulled ahead early in the game with assistance from Auburn (13-14, 2-6 SEC).
After taking down the first four in LSU’s lineup, Auburn allowed junior shortstop Kramer Robertson to get on base with a throwing error.
Freshman left fielder Brody Wofford singled on the next bat and another error by Auburn advanced Robertson to third. Freshman third baseman Chris Reid hit a triple to bring in Wofford and Robertson, which both unearned runs.
LSU continued to take advantage in the fourth as a junior catcher Jordan Romero hit a home run on the first pitch of the inning to take 3-0 lead.
Auburn answered in the fifth with an RBI by senior designated hitter Jordan Ebert. However, on the same play, LSU managed to get double play to limit the damage.
In the sixth inning, Auburn continued to assist LSU. After sophomore first baseman Greg Deichmann struck out swinging, but a wild pitch allowed him to reach first base.
Romero drove a double on the next at back to bring LSU’s lead back to three.
LSU continued to pull away in the seventh after four hits and another Auburn error pushed LSU lead to 7-1.
Auburn answered in the bottom of the eight with three hits and one run, but LSU responded in the ninth inning when junior second baseman Cole Freeman was brought in by a wild pitch.
Auburn continued its late comeback in the bottom of the ninth with four runs on five hit to close out the game, before LSU finally managed to close out the game.
Auburn left 11 runners on base, including six in the first three innings. LSU left just four on. Auburn committed three errors, while LSU was flawless defensively.
Junior starting pitcher Jared Poche’ completed 6.1 innings on 105 pitches, allowing one run and striking out six batters. Poche’ moved to 3-3 on the season.
LSU plays Auburn at 1 p.m. tomorrow in the rubber match.
