French braids, “galaxy buns,” fanny packs and Chacos were scattered in every crowd at the Hangout Music Festival. Festival goers from across the world showcased a variety of styles to celebrate the three-day festival on the beach May 20-22.
While some went for gypsy and hippie styles with tie-dye wear and harem pants, many attendees wore bathing suits, shorts and airy tops. Among the many styles displayed, there were a few trends that could be seen at any stage throughout the festival.
1. Braids
French braids, fishtail braids, braids that turned into buns and more were a very popular trend in women’s hairstyles. Some were creative, incorporating different colored hair pieces, spray paint and temporary tattoos to take their style to the next level.
2. Buns
With the sun on their necks and backs, both men and women looked at wearing their hair in a bun as their go-to style. Women often wore their hair in two buns, one high bun or incorporated other techniques to create their bun style. Some women had buns with spray paint or glitter on them and called them “galaxy buns.”
3. Glitter & Body Paint
Glitter here, glitter there, glitter everywhere. Leaving the festival without one speck of glitter was nearly impossible. The festival had a tent where attendees were able to pay for someone to cover their body in glitter. Others had come prepared before the festival with glitter on their faces, in their hair or in designs all over their bodies.
Words, graphics and designs were painted on many festival-goers. While some more extreme than others, many were limited to face paintings of designs, plants and letters.
4. Fanny Packs
Backpack and bag possession was limited to small fanny packs, CamelBaks and small backpacks for security purposes. Most women festival-goers wore monogrammed fanny packs with their initials or sorority letters, while most men wore CamelBaks.
5. Chacos
Rotating between hot sand and tar roads, many attendees wore Chacos hiking sandals. Both men and women wore them in an array of colors. Fortunately, the sandals were easy to strap around fanny packs and other bags when attendees wanted to walk barefoot.
The styles displayed throughout the fest showed the diversity of the 40,000 attendees. Some were Alabama locals or LSU students, but many drove and flew hours from states and countries to experience the festivities that the Hangout Music Festival had to offer. While the amount of styles may have been different, the idea of gathering for the love of music was the same.
