Beginning March 1, 2016 LSU will hold its first ever “Tiger Tuesdays” event in Free Speech Alley from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Tiger Tuesdays, hosted by Campus Life, will be similar to the semi-annual involvement fair, only it will occur every Tuesday. Second year Master’s student Ricky Meinkem, who created the event, said he believes students will benefit from it.
Each week Tiger Tuesday will feature music, a variety of table sits and performances from different student organizations like the Black Artist Initiative or NPHC organizations.
Meinke, who serves as the graduate assistant for African American Student Affairs, came up with the idea along with the Black Leadership Council at LSU as a physical answer to the lack of representation minority organizations receive.
The BLC was formed last semester as a coalition of black students leaders to figure out what minority students need.
With Tiger Tuesdays, all organizations on campus have the chance to constantly represent themselves and publicize their events. Students will be able to learn more about different organizations such as, what that organization does on campus, how they contribute to the community and what they can offer the student body, Meinke said.
Student Government member and Computer Science senior John Lewis, said he will be representing Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated on Tuesday.
“I think the student body will benefit from it by being able to be more regularly associated with student orgs outside of student involvement fairs and events,” said Lewis.
Lewis said that he thinks students will receive the event well since similar events have been well received on other campuses, and has become a form of tradition, such as at Florida State University.
If any student organizations are interested in participating, they can sign up through TigerLink.
“Looking to the future we hope to make this not just an event but an LSU tradition. We want students to be able to say Tiger Tuesdays is what got them involved in their student org,” said Meinke.
He said that he hopes students will take part in the festive culture that Tiger Tuesdays hopes to have.
