The No. 3 LSU softball team secured its third straight run-rule victory 13-2 in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader against the University of Connecticut at Tiger Park.
Although the Tigers (3-0) and Huskies (1-3) seemed to be locked in a pitchers’ duel heading into the bottom of the third inning, LSU’s bats caught fire and turned a scoreless game into a blowout, scoring all 13 LSU runs.
Freshman left fielder Elyse Thornhill doubled to her first career hit to start the Tigers’ rally, but junior third basemen Sahvanna Jaquish showcased her power with a grand slam out of left field, her first of 2016 and LSU’s second of the season.
The Huskies’ (1-3) starting freshman pitcher Jill Stockley allowed five runs on two hits and walked a batter before being replaced by sophomore Chelsea Eckert.
But Eckert didn’t help UConn’s cause when she hit LSU’s senior first basemen Sandra Simmons to walk in another run.
The Huskies’ pitching carousel ended after Eckert was immediately pulled in favor of junior Kayla Doty, who finished the game with six hits allowed and five earned-runs.
UConn senior catcher Jacklyn Dubois hit a solo home run to break the shutout in the top of the fourth and the Huskies rallied to add another run in the fifth, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Tigers from clinching their third mercy-rule win of the season.
