We can’t all be lucky enough to make it to the Broadway shows we’d love to see: we catch glimpses of Hamilton at the Grammys, we download the soundtracks, we read summaries online. But thanks to Broadway producers Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comley, our bootlegging days may be coming to an end.
BroadwayHD, created by Lane and Comley, is an on-demand service that will stream Broadway shows similarly to Netflix and Hulu with broadcasted media. Initially, a little over 100 different shows were offered, including Romeo and Juliet starring Orlando Bloom, and Jekyll and Hyde starring David Hasselhoff. Many of the shows are filmed from stages in London, where recordings are more common than they are on Broadway.
Viewers can pay a one-time fee to watch a specific show, or they can subscribe monthly or yearly. First time users can also sign up for a single-show free trial to test the experience.
An experience that, according to one of BroadwayHD’s creators, is not meant to compete with actually attending a show on Broadway. Nothing can compare with the feeling of sitting in a theater with live performers, but with BroadwayHD, some people can get closer than they’ve ever been.
