With the 88th Academy Awards quickly approaching, now’s the time to place your bets. Below, I’ve listed my opinions on who will win and who should win in some of the most significant categories.
Best Picture
Who Will Win: “The Revenant”
Iñárritu’s epic tale of survival has emerged as the favorite to take home the most sought-after award of the night. I’ve also seen some strong support for “Spotlight,” but I think “The Revenant” will more than likely be the big winner. Interestingly enough, if I’m right, Iñárritu will have won Best Picture two years in a row (his film “Birdman” won last year).
Who Should Win: “The Big Short”
Personally, I enjoyed no film in 2015 more than I enjoyed “The Big Short.” From the star-studded cast to the subtly hilarious script, it was an all-around blast to watch. I admired that director Adam McKay was able to transform a somewhat complicated subject into something that almost everyone could understand and enjoy.
Actor in a Leading Role
Who Will and Should Win: Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant”)
As much as I hate all of the memes surrounding DiCaprio’s Oscar, let’s be honest, it’s long overdue. While I don’t think “The Revenant” was the best film of the year, I see no problem with handing DiCaprio the award for Best Actor. Luckily for ABC’s ratings, awarding Leo his first golden statue will be as much of a publicity stunt as it will be a genuine recognition of DiCaprio’s talent.
Actress in a Leading Role
Who Will and Should Win: Brie Larson (“Room”)
First and foremost, it should be noted that Larson spent a month in isolation in preparation for the film. It seems to have worked out for her, as she gave the most captivating performance I saw all year. It’s just a shame that Jacob Tremblay couldn’t get a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for what I think was one of the best child performances of all time.
Directing
Who Will Win: Alejandro González Iñárritu (“The Revenant”)
Nobody would be surprised to see Iñárritu take this one home, especially if I’m correct and “The Revenant” wins best picture.
Who Should Win: George Miller (“Mad Max: Fury Road”)
While Iñárritu is definitely one of my top contenders for Best Director, I’d really like to see Miller get the nod for “Mad Max: Fury Road.” The elaborate stunt choreography and groundbreaking practical effects made it one of the most exciting visual spectacles I’ve ever seen in theatres and Miller is more than deserving of this accolade.
