LSU students skipped class to attend a walk out and rally in protest of cuts to higher education Thursday.
The Save our Schools Coalition allowed former LSU students to talk about why higher education should not be cut.
“There’s a delicious bit of irony in a professor addressing a group of students ditching class,” Professor Brian McCann said, “But my hunch is that a lot of my colleague share the belief that this is an excused absence, because after all we reserve excused absences for times of emergencies. And let’s be perfectly clear, we’re experiencing an emergency right now.”
Students also called their legislators and were encouraged to email and “annoy” them in an attempt to get something done about budget cuts.
“We have to be involved,” rally organizer Peter Jenkins said.
Speakers made it clear that while these problems effect LSU, they also effect schools across the state and that students should band together to put a stop to the budget cuts.
Students say they attended because they were concerned with the fate of the school, which has the potential of closing April 30 if legislative action is not taken, and also as a class assignment. Some sociology students were told they could get credit if they attended the event.
“I think it’s important to be aware of what’s going on because if the university closes I can’t graduate in May,” says LSU senior Scarlett Myer.
Students will march the Capitol on Friday to try to get their legislators to take action. Students are encouraged to arrive at the Capitol for 11:30 and bring signs. Wednesday, the Board of Regents and CSBP, the Council of Student Body Presidents, will have a rally at the Capitol.
