In the first set of weekly honors awarded by the conference, LSU sophomore pitcher Alex Lange has been named Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.
Lange powered a 4-0 win Saturday against Cincinnati, giving up only one hit while striking out nine in 6 ⅔ innings. Prior to the seventh inning, Lange allowed only two runners to reach second base.
He squashed a one-out threat in the top of the second with a pair of strikeouts and stranded a runner at second in the top of the fourth with another punch-out and a fly out. Of the 91 pitches Lange threw, 57 went for strikes, and he walked just three Bearcats.
With the win, the Lee Summit, Missouri native continues his perfect 13-0 record, dating back to the end of last season.
Along with the league honor for the sophomore hurler, the Tigers (3-0) jumped into the top 10 of one poll. Baseball America now has LSU ranked No. 8 in its newest poll, leaping from the No. 11 ranking in the organization’s preseason poll.
The Tigers already held a top-10 ranking in three other major preseason polls, topping out and staying put at No. 5 in Perfect Game’s most recent rankings. LSU also remained No. 7 in both the D1Baseball.com and the Collegiate Baseball polls.
The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association also revealed its newest poll late Monday afternoon, bumping the Tigers one spot to No. 6.
