Today, the Louisiana Queer Conference’s official Twitter announced that this year’s conference will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016, at LSU’s Business Education Complex.
Since it began in 2011, the LAQC, the biggest event of its kind in the South, has hosted hundreds of college students, activists, and other community members for a weekend of leadership development and networking opportunities for members of the LGBTQ community. Workshops about things like safe sex, transgender inclusion, suicide prevention, and activism at the university level are held in three different sessions throughout the conference. There are also student-led panels about college life as an LGBTQ individual, a keynote address, an information fair, and a queer prom thrown on Saturday night, for everyone who was unable or was not allowed to attend or enjoy their high school prom because of their identity or orientation.
Each year a theme is announced around which the entire conference is based; this year’s theme will be Crossroads of Experience. Themes in the past have included Bold Not Broken: Queer Resilience in the South, Pride to Power, and It’s All of Us or None of Us. Louisiana Queer Conference is a chance for a community to come together, support each other, and share their experiences.
Admission for LSU students is free; $5 for students of other universities with ID proof, and $10 for anyone else wishing to attend.
