Animal sciences junior Asia Williams juggles her full time student status and her position as president of the University service club, You Got Served, whose members are gearing up for their third annual Real Men Wear Pink Fashion Show.
The fashion show will take place in the LSU Student Union Royal Cotillion Ballroom on Monday, Oct.24 from 7-8:30 p.m. Open to all, a donation to the American Cancer Society serves as admission to the event.
The community-based organization hosts its own events, such as fundraisers and donation drives, to achieve its mission of helping impoverished families and children throughout Baton Rouge.
“Our mission is really to give back to the community,” Williams said.
“You Got Served” will join the dozens of other events taking place in October, which doubles as National Breast Cancer Awareness month, by celebrating survivors and raising awareness.
Through word-of-mouth promotions and social media promotions, Williams encourages University students to come and enjoy the event, which will help fund the research needed to make advancements in cancer treatment.
Teaming up with Relay for Life, the fashion show’s proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society. In the event’s first year, the club raised $800 toward the cause, and the second year, the club split the donations, giving half to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Baton Rouge and the rest to the American Cancer Society.
During the hour-and-a-half-long fashion show, there will be four different segments, including active wear, casual wear, Sunday’s best and closing wear.
In between segments, intercessions will entertain and educate the crowd. There will be a cancer survivor’s testimony, a performance from the Caribbean Students Association, a disc jockey and giveaways.
