With the DJ mixing funky tunes in the background, the University club You Got Served, geared up in the Royal Cotillion Ballroom for its third Annual Real Men Wear Pink fashion show Monday.
The community-based organization, You Got Served, hosts fundraisers and donation drives, to achieve their mission of helping impoverished families and children in the Greater Baton Rouge Area.
The show began three years ago with founder Jian Massucco, who not only founded the club, You Got Served, but also created the Real Men Wear Pink fashion show.
“Someone is being affected from breast cancer right now,” said Massucco she took to the stage to state the “importance of donations” being that all proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.
During the hour-and-a-half-long show, there were four different segments, including “Activewear,” “Casual Wear,” “Formal Wear” and “Closing Wear.”
The “Club Pink” segment started off the show featuring student models who strutted the runway wearing local student T-shirts and hoodies designed by LSU clubs. The “Activewear” segment featured models styled to sweat stylishly. The formal wear segment entitled “James Bond” featured models dressed to impress in their suits and dresses. The last look of the night “Closing Wear” featured all the models united on the stage as they ended the show all smiles in their jeans and T-shirts.
Executive director for the Relay for Life chapter at LSU, Sarah Chester, shared her personal testimony. In 2006, when Chester was 9 years old, her world was turned upside down when her father was diagnosed with breast cancer. The fight for his life was not only his, but as Chester explained, “a family fight.” After her father’s passing due to cancer, her viewpoint changed as she joined Relay for Life’s mission in the fight against cancer.
The University’s Caribbean Student Association, hit the stage to dancehall favorites to show us moves from the island. The club’s performance led to an impromptu dance tutorial, as the girls taught participating audience members a few of their favorite moves.
Closing out the event, president and animal science junior, Asia Williams, gave thanks for the opportunity given to have a forum to celebrate survivors and raise awareness to others. “Our mission is really to give back to the community,” Williams said.
