For the first time in its history, CoverGirl’s newest spokesperson is not a girl. Instead, it’s 17-year-old Instagram celebrity and makeup artist James Charles, who was featured in an Oct. 11 CoverGirl video, during which he spoke about who he is and why the position is a dream come true for him. Unsurprisingly, this announcement spurred varied responses among male University students.
Mass communication freshman Zachary Weinstein said he hadn’t heard about the newest CoverGirl, but it’s good that they’re putting less emphasis on gender norms.
“I guess that’s pretty cool if they’re going to switch it up,” Weinstein said. “I mean, obviously CoverGirl has been dominated by women.”
ISDS junior Joseph Hauth said he didn’t agree with CoverGirl’s decision, but the company should be able to do whatever it wants.
“I guess it’s weird, in a way, because he’s being a girl gender-wise, but not sex-wise,” he said. “I think it’s just an opinion on what people think, and CoverGirl went with what it thinks as a company.”
Petroleum engineering graduate student John Estrada said people should be able to act how they want.
“I think that anyone can choose what they want to do,” he said. “I don’t have any restrictions on that. Honestly, it is up to the person. There shouldn’t be any regulations or prohibitions about it.”
