Mike the Tiger was put down Tuesday after a four month battle with cancer. He has been LSU’s live mascot since 2007.
“It has been coming for a long time but he has just been our rock and our strength at LSU,” Kathyrn Simmons said.
LSU is looking to find a new tiger to replace him and will be known as Mike VII.
“It’s a gloomy day here but we’re going to have another one and it’s all good,” Taylor George said.
During his nine years as LSU’s live mascot, members of the LSU community have many fond memories of seeing him in his habitat.
“I fell in love with him from the very first day. He not only was a gorgeous tiger, but he was just full of personality. You could tell he really liked the people around him,” Gayle Rabb said.
For other students, seeing Mike helped them deal with the stress they encounter in their daily lives in college.
“I’d come see him whenever I had a bad day. So of course this is a bad day. I just wrote him a letter telling him ‘thank you for listening and you’re going to be missed,'” Charmaine Margioles said.
