HOOVER, Ala– The Southeastern Conference Media Days came to a close on Thursday with LSU, Ole Miss and South Carolina coaches and players all meeting with the media.
On of the topics addressed was the Tigers’ No. 3 2016 recruiting class.
Two recruits, five-star defensive tackle Edwin Alexander and three-star defensive end Andre Anthony, did not report for summer school.
Former Edna Karr defensive end Anthony, is having issues being cleared by the NCAA because of prior coursework, and former St. Thomas Aquinas defensive tackle Alexander didn’t originally meet the ACT score requirement.
However, LSU coach Les Miles said he expects both players to be eligible for the fall.
“We would expect that those guys would make it for fall camp,” Miles said. “If they both do what is slated for them to do, [they] will qualify.”
Miles alluded that there will be an appeal process for Anthony if he is denied by the NCAA, which requested Anthony present coursework from his time at Miller McCoy Academy in New Orleans, which closed two years ago.
Miles said the student athletes will report to fall camp on August 4 and should begin practice sometime that week.
The Tigers lost their starting kicker
On Wednesday, LSU lost its starting kicker for next season.
Fifth-year senior Trent Domingue announced via Twitter that he was leaving LSU after his scholarship was not initially renewed and that he’d be looking elsewhere.
Miles said he tried to find a way for Domingue to stay at LSU and asked Domingue to give him “time” but said he might have other reasons for his departure.
“All I told him was give me a few days, give me some time and we’ll make this work,” Miles said. “I think he had other reasons that he needed to go. We wish him well.”
Domingue was named on the Lou Groza Award watch list on July 6.
Ethan Pocic’s rehab was “tough”
Back in January, senior center Ethan Pocic had surgery for his hip and said rehab was “tough”
“But I’d say the hardest part about it—I gained a little bit of weight and I had to bring it back down a little bit,” Pocic said. “That wasn’t easy. The rehab you just got to get into a routine and do it every day. We have a good training staff, they know what they’re doing.”
Since his surgery was earlier in the year it gave the 6-foot-7, 302 pound offensive lineman more time to recover.
He didn’t have a set deadline to be back, but Pocic said he’s cleared for the fall and won’t be limited.
Tre’Davious White hopes to return a punt in the season opener
LSU opens the season on Sept. 3 against Wisconsin at the historic Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Senior cornerback Tre’Davious White hopes Miles gives him the opportunity to return a punt so he can reach the end zone against the Badgers.
“Personally I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “I want to return a touchdown—a punt return, so I can ‘Lambeau leap.’ I want to do that. I hope coach Miles gives me the leeway to take that 15-yard penalty because that’s an experience I’ll never forget.”
Other news: Jennings transferring to UL-Lafayette
The University of Louisiana Lafayette announced via press release that former LSU quarterback Anthony Jennings will enroll at the school for his graduate degree.
Jennings will finish his undergraduate courses at LSU and will have one year of eligibility left, after starting 13 games with the Tigers.
