Winter Circle Productions released their Fall Concert Calendar earlier this week, complete with an array of artists representing all genres. With a lineup including the likes of Flume, Chance the Rapper, Sturgill Simpson and more, picking and choosing which performances to attend may prove difficult.
To alleviate some of that internal conflict, here are my suggestions for the top five concerts you should look out for.
1) Chance the Rapper
When: October 13
Where: Mardi Gras World Ballroom
If you’re looking for inspiration in a party scene, Chance the Rapper’s show is the place to go. A newcomer to the mainstream hip-hop world, Chance the Rapper has reserved a spot at the cool kids’ table. With his latest album, “Coloring Book,” he launches himself further into the public eye, generating a huge fanbase. Fans can look forward to a diverse repertoire, including “No Problem” and “Mixtape.” Sadly, you’ll have to rely on Snapchat videos to see the show, because it’s already sold out.
2) Jason Isbell
When: October 22 – 23
Where: Joy Theater
For a little bluesy country at its core, check out the Jason Isbell concert. Seen as an outsider by the mainstream country music world, this singer-songwriter won’t be confined to a single genre. Isbell’s roots go back to country, blues, soul and gospel. Whatever your preference, Isbell will serve a hearty helping of his soulful melodies and storytelling lyrics. He’ll share the stage with Josh Ritter on Oct. 22nd, and John Moreland on Oct. 23.
3) Tegan and Sara
When: November 12
Where: Joy Theater
Ditch the beanies and Doc Martens, and take your hipster tendencies to the Tegan and Sara concert. Since they garnered major mainstream success in 2013 with their song “Closer,” the Canadian twins have become indie pop idols. With their in-your-face feminism and cool indie pop sound, this show will be one worth attending.
4) James Blake
When: September 27
Where: Orpheum Theater
Bring your candles and tissues, because James Blake’s concert is sure to make you sentimental. Like to Isbell, Blake’s style remains hard to define. With a mix of folk, soul and electronica, his music can put anyone in a trance. Blake’s haunting vocals and interesting sound earned him the opportunity to work with Queen Bey on her album Lemonade, where you can hear his unforgettable tone in the song “Forward.” Hopefully he’ll perform it at his show for all to hear again.
5) Ja Rule and Ashanti
When: September 10
Where: Joy Theater
Throwback to simpler times and look out for blasts from the past Ja Rule and Ashanti, the Jay Z and Beyonce of the early 2000s. Though they aren’t as popular with this new generation, ’90s children would appreciate this hip-hop and R&B duo taking the stage together once again. Expect to hear their most popular song together, “Always on Time,” and possibly some solo music, such as Ashanti’s “Foolish” and Rule’s “Livin’ it Up.”
