At long last, the final installment to The Math Lab Special Summer Edition Math Rock Masterclass is here. Although belated (thanks to inclement weather and school starting back up), DJ 5/4 is back for the new school year to bring math rock to the good people of the world. This show’s focus is on two legendary, yet short lived, math rock bands: Piglet and Slint. Piglet, hailing from Chicago, IL released their only album in 2005 and subsequently set the bar a little higher for the math rock genre. Their album, Lava Land, is a carefree and childlike exploration into the realm of polyrhythms, atypical song structures, and the other odds and ends that make math rock so special. To foil Lava Land, the second half of this special show is dedicated to Slint, most notably their seminal album Spiderland. Spiderland (and Slint’s debut album, Tweez) is a dark journey to magical worlds and evil places. It’s cold, chilly, and absolutely stunning. Both of these albums are perfect representations of the spectrum of math rock. What a great way to finish off the series! DJ 5/4/ hosts The Math Lab every Sunday from 7 – 9 PM on 91.1 KLSU.
